Principles for Healthy Design

How can products be designed to induce health?

Building H is concerned about the influences that the products and services of everyday life — in industries such as entertainment, food, housing and transportation — have on people’s health. We want to hold companies accountable for their impact (through the Building H Index), but we also want to help them do better. To that end, we’re developing a set of Healthy Design Principles — heuristics that can be used by designers, developers, and product managers as they design products and services, with the goal of helping them factor in the net health impact on their users and customers.

Work Products

We envision two sets of work products associated with this project: a set of general Healthy Design Principles and a reference set of Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) that could help make the principles actionable and foster accountability for their execution. Ideally, these will be relevant for both digital and physical design processes.

Process

We’re holding a series of in-person and virtual workshops this fall to gather input and get feedback on the Healthy Design Principles as we develop them. Please let us know if you’d be interested in attending or helping us plan one of the meetups. In addition, we’re looking to work with a small number of companies in the entertainment, food, housing and transportation industries - as well as tech companies that intersect with those industries - to beta test and get feedback on the Principles and OKRs. If you represent a company with an interest in participating in that process, please let us know.
